Although an inset puzzle this is useful for children when recognising their numbers. A stage of a child's development is when they can associate a number with what it looks like written down as well as associating it with the relevant number of objects. Under each number, painted on the base, are the relevant number of dots, so the child can count the number of dots and them find the puzzle piece with that number on it
